Calling all volunteers! Feel free to share! Warrandyte Community Bank, in partnership with Manningham Council and Conservation Volunteers Australia, has organised three working bees on the Warrandyte properties affected by the bushfire on 9 February 2014. Many of the 38 properties affected by the fire discovered that while their house and contents were covered by insurance, their garden was not. They have the constant reminder of the trauma of the fire every time they look out their windows. You or your group is invited to be a part of this project. We have also put out an invitation to the nearby residents of Amersham and Glamis Court, Landcare groups (who are also providing many of the plants) along with other local people willing to volunteer some time. The local CFAs will be in attendance as well, and it provides us a great opportunity to thank them too for their tremendous efforts over the fire season.
The working bees are scheduled for the following dates, and all volunteers must register with CVA beforehand through the relevant link.
Sunday 17 August 9:30am – 3:00pm (bbq lunch provided by Warrandyte Lions from 12noon – 2:00pm) www.conservationvolunteers.com.au/book/Warrandyteplanting/17Aug2014
Sunday 21 September 9:30am – 3:00pm (BYO picnic lunch) www.conservationvolunteers.com.au/book/Warrandyteplanting/21Sep2014
Sunday 19 October 9:30am – 3:00pm (BYO picnic lunch) www.conservationvolunteers.com.au/book/Warrandyteplanting/19Oct2014
The program is being run through Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) to ensure we have equipment and OH&S issues are dealt with appropriately. But we also encourage volunteers to bring along their own handtools (no power tools) to ensure there is enough to go around. Appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, gardening gloves and a water bottle will also be required. No children under 7, and those aged 7 – 15 must be supervised by an adult. The program is being funded through the Warrandyte Community Bank, East Doncaster Community Bank and the Community Enterprise Foundation through funds obtained from the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal. If you can help, or share this post, we’d really appreciate your help in spreading the word.
