PLANNING APPLICATION 5 COLAN ROAD NORTH WARRANDYTE
Our apologies for mis-spelling the address in the previous newsletter.
A Compulsory Conference between the applicant and objectors was held by VCAT on February 16.
At the Conference objectors were interested to know if the applicant would consider amending the siting or scale of the building but the applicant would not consider changing either so the matter will now go to a full hearing at VCAT on May 10-11.
BIKE PATHS
… from Crystal Brook to the High School. For many years we have dreamed of being able to ride from Warrandyte to the city on a dedicated and safe bike path. Manningham Council are helping to achieve this. Work is underway of the section from Crystal Brook to Warrandyte High School. It will be completed by mid-year. WCA members met on site with Council engineers to consider the route. Pine trees were removed and Council intend to re-landscape the environs of the path. There are some important trees along the route, and there are concerns regarding adequate tree protection for these during the construction period. There is a wide reservation for the path at Alexander Road end, but lower down the path is narrow and quite close to the road. Council propose putting a fence on the left hand side to protect riders against the drop-off. There will also raised barrier between the road and bike path at the lower end, to increase cyclist safety.
… along Taroona Avenue. The route of the bike path from Pound Road to Taroona Avenue is not yet resolved. However, there is general agreement from the cyclists, local residents and the community regarding Taroona Avenue. Council will build a walking path along the eastern side of Taroona Avenue. This will not be a shared path. Cyclists will ride along Taroona Avenue from Heidelberg Warrandyte Road to Everard Drive. There have been two community meetings, and before the work begins, there will be opportunity to see the final proposal. The works may commence later in 2023, depending on various heritage approvals. The WCA supports the latest plans
DRAINAGE WORKS
Council is undertaking significant drainage works in Everard Drive. WCA and local residents had a number of onsite consultations with Manningham Council engineers regarding the proposed works. The result was some re-alignment and fewer trees lost. However, the works raised many issues regarding how to retain water for the vegetation and natural drainage systems. Council has in the past tended to look for engineering solutions, rather than ecologically sustainable solutions. We are very hopeful that with the development of an Integrated Water Management Strategy which aligns with the Yarra Strategic Plan that this will change.
Thank you for your continuing support. We look forward to updating you on local news again soon.
