The Warrandyte Community Association has won three awards at the annual Fire Awareness Awards, including the top overall Award for Excellence.
WCA President Dick Davies said he was gobsmacked with the result.
“We knew we were finalists for two awards and were hoping for one, but three is just over the top. I wasn’t even aware of the overall award for excellence.”
“It’s a huge tribute to Warrandyte and the ability of the community to work with the Emergency Services and Local Government on a constructive program.
“Well done everyone,” he said.
WCA has finished the year on a on a high for the after receiving a ‘High Commendation’ in the 2013 Resilient Australia Awards and its ‘Creekside’ Retirement offshoot winning another Housing Industry Award.
With 100 Fire Awareness entries overall, the WCA winning categories were:
Community Preparedness Award
This recognises and highlights positive actions taken to improve bushfire/fire preparedness within Victorian towns or municipalities. Awarded to the Warrandyte Community Association for its ‘Be Ready Warrandyte – Living with Bushfire Risk’ campaign.
Media and Communications Award
This award is for an innovative fire related media or communications project delivered through journalism, social media, publications, marketing, public relations, advertising or events, that has increased awareness of fire through responsible reporting and promotion.
Awarded to the Warrandyte Community Association and Warrandyte Theatre Company for the video: ‘Do you have a fire plan?’
RACV Insurance Award for Excellence
Awarded to one project that stands out as making a particularly significant and innovative contribution to promoting fire awareness in the community.
Awarded to the Warrandyte Community Association for the ‘Be Ready Warrandyte – Living with Bushfire Risk’ campaign.
The awards are presented by the CFA, MFB, State Government, Fire Services Commissioner and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries and are sponsored by the ABC and RACV.

The WCA ‘Be Ready Warrandyte’ project was funded by the Victorian Government’s former Fire Ready Communities Grants Program. Manningham Council, Nillumbik Council, the Warrandyte Community Bank and the Community Market Committee have also provided funding support.
